Memory on Trial: Alaska's Deadliest Unsolved Murder Case

  • Mountain View Library Community Room 120 Bragaw Street Anchorage, AK, 99508 United States (map)

Join Brittany Retherford, an independent journalist and historian, as she revisits one of Alaska's most mysterious and brutal crimes—the murder of eight people aboard a fishing vessel in Southeast Alaska in 1982. Though one man was arrested for the murders, he was acquitted in 1988 following one of the state's longest and most expensive trials. Retherford will discuss the case, her experience investigating the story, and the lessons she has learned in how people cope with traumatic experiences. This topic may not be suitable for small children, however, Retherford will focus her talk on the exploring the deep and lasting toll of unexplained violence, and the desperate human desire for answers.

Brittany Retherford has been researching the story of the Investor murders ever since she first arrived in Alaska in 2007. A former newspaper reporter, fish wrangler, and cultural anthropologist, she now makes her home in Anchorage. She earned an undergraduate degree from Barnard College and a master’s degree in Northern Studies from University of Alaska Fairbanks.
